Normal injector return-flow results can reduce suspicion of excessive injector internal leakage.
They do not eliminate other rail-pressure control components.
Follow Pressure Control Upstream
If rail pressure remains unstable despite acceptable injector return, the diagnostic boundary moves toward:
- low-pressure supply;
- inlet metering valve;
- high-pressure pump;
- rail pressure-control architecture.
Command Is Only One Layer
An ECU may command an IMV/SCV correctly while contamination or mechanical sticking changes actual fuel metering.
The diagnostic distinction is:
electrical command correct
versus
hydraulic metering response correct.
Why Injector Replacement Would Miss the Fault
Injectors cannot compensate for inadequate fuel entering the high-pressure pump.
Replacing injectors with acceptable return behavior would address the wrong system boundary.
